As a proof of what this new breed of cameras is capable of I think it worked very well and to this day the video has been viewed more than 350,000 times on Vimeo.

Early in 2012 I was invited to Austria to take part in a photographic contest during a week of skiing with the worlds best women freeskiers. 4 photographers were invited from around the world and I represented N.America. The organizers had built a huge snow feature on the mountain at Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and we had several days to utilize the feature and create a collection of images to document the skiing. We shot several times at sunset and also sunrise one morning, heading up the mountain at 4am. Having several sessions spread over four days allowed us to get perfect weather conditions and allowed me a decent amount of time to experiment with many different images.

At the end of the week our images were submitted to the contest in four categories and I was awarded the main award for Best Action Image , as well as the award for Most Creative Image.

Best Action Image

As the sun set behind the mountains on this evening a wonderful silhouette showed itself behind the jump. I used a collection of strobes fired remotely from various directions to light the skier and the jump, and lined the image up to create a symmetry between the mountains and the lights on the ground.

Most Creative Image

One of the professional skiers, Jen Hudak, was injured and could not take part in any skiing that week. I decided to use a macro lens and shoot the reflection of the skier hitting the jump right in her eyes. Since it was a women’s freeskiing contest I really liked the idea of seeing it though another girls eye and her mascara makes it distinctively female.

Magazine Feature

In the winter following the competition my collection of images ran as a feature in Skier Magazine.

I’m a bit of a gear head. There, I admitted it. We all know that it’s the person behind the camera that makes the images but I like to stay on top of new technology and explore the way that advancements can help me achieve images in a different way or in a higher quality. I write posts several times a week about on my general photography blog that explore new cameras, lenses, software and other equipment that I’m interested in.

Where to buy the best gear ?

Typically I buy my gear from either B&H Photo or Amazon and occasionally Adorama. I’ve experienced exceptional customer service from all three at some point or other and can wholeheartedly recommend all of them. I have a customized Amazon store that might help you find what you are looking for.

If you happen to be looking for camera bags for general use or sports photography use then I would definitely recommend checking out Think Tank Photo. You’ll see in my gear list below that I have a number of their carrying solutions in my closet for when I’m traveling or shooting at sporting events which is where their gear really excels. I’m happy to tell you that as a friend of the site and follower of my work, Think Tank Photo will offer you a FREE gift of a small bag or accessory when you purchase more then $50 worth of stuff from their store after clicking through one of my links!

Rent RED Epic & Scarlet Digital Cinema cameras

As well as some audio and photography gear I also have the Red Epic, the very latest in digital cinema cameras available to rent through my business.

Dan Carr’s Gear Guide

This is a complete list of all the gear that I use and recommend to my readers. I have taken a great deal of time to document everything with my own notes and examples of how things get used. This is the gear that was used to create the images and content you will find on my sites and in my eBooks. If you think that I have missed something off the list then please leave me a note using the contact form but be sure to check though all the sections first. This list will continue to evolve as my gear changes, as technology continues and as my needs are altered by the work that I am doing. I will also continue to add example images to the product descriptions as new shots become available.

Disclosure: Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links, it won’t cost you a penny more, but if you decide to purchase something I might earn a small commission. Please understand that this is the equipment I own and use to create my work and I recommend them because they are what is currently working for me, not because of the small commissions I make if you decide to buy through one of the links. Using these links helps me maintain this site and the information on it.

Many of you know me for my outdoor and adventure sports photography. I live in Whistler,BC, home of the worlds #1 ski resort and the best mountain biking terrain on the planet. People often inquire what sort of gear I’m using outdoors, whether it be skiing, biking, camping or trekking. This section details the contents of my gear cupboard to date, and the outdoor clothing that keeps me warm, dry and comfortable while I’m shooting.

All of the images you can find on any of my sites are available as fine art prints in a variety of formats. This includes all images on TheSkiPhotographer.com , anything you can find in my searchable archive, anything in my portfolios from the above menu, anything from my specific galleries and anything you might have stumbled upon in a magazine.

NOTE: In the early stages of launching this new website not all my galleries are online and not all my images are in my archive. It’s a constant process at the moment to update these so please check back in the future as well.

Popular Prints

I have set up a gallery of images that contains my most regularly requested prints.

On Display In Whistler

If you happen to be in Whistler, or you live here, I have a selection of images on display in Alta Bistro. These vary from smaller canvas or framed giclee images to huge 48″ prints.

A 48" high print of Dane Tudor in Alta Bistro

Requesting A Print

If the image is from a magazine simply let me know which issue and what page the photo is on.

If you find an image in a gallery on my site, or in the archive please let me know the file name of the image as in the diagram below.

Please e-mail orders@dancarrphotography.com to discuss further.

Print Options

Giclee archival prints on the highest quality matte photographic paper and sprayed with a protective archival solution for longevity. The print can be either delivered rolled in a tube or custom framing can also be arranged.

Framed archival giclee print

Giclee canvas prints are also available and are extremely popular. Canvas prints require stretching onto a wooden frame in order to be hung on the wall. Unstretched prints can be mailed in a tube and then you can have your local framer stretch it to a simple wooden frame usually just for a few dollars. This saves on slightly higher shipping costs of canvas prints that have already been stretched. Overall cost of a canvas print is usually less than a framed archival print, especially for very large prints like the 48″one shown earlier on.

Canvas print stretched onto a frame

Black edges to stretched canvas

A further option for canvas prints is to get them mounted into a sunken wooden frame which is my personal favorite.

Canvas in sunken frame
